Aston, Pa., -Nineteen Division III baseball players were selected in the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft. Five of those nineteen played in The Colonial States Athlete Conference (CSAC). The next closest Division III conference had two players drafted, as both the Heartland Conference and the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin saw two student-athletes drafted.
The first CSAC player selected and first Division III position player selected was Gary Mitchell (Huntingdon Valley, PA/Lower Moreland) from Neumann University. The outfielder earned a spot on the ECAC Division III South Regional second team, the America Baseball Coaches Association Mid-Atlantic 3rd team, the CSAC first team all-conference and the CSAC All-Academic team. Mitchell was drafted in the 21st round by the Los Angeles Angels.
The next four CSAC student-athletes selected in the MLB draft played at Keystone College under CSAC Coach of the Year Jamie Shevchik. Keystone College won The CSAC baseball championship and advanced to the Mid-Atlantic Regional in the NCAA Tournament. Yazy Arbelo (Port St. Lucie, FL) was the second Division III position player to be selected after fellow CSAC player Mitchell. Arbelo was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 26th round. Yazy earned a second team all-conference selection.
Two Keystone pitchers were the next to go as Sean Murphy (Philadelphia, PA) was selected in the 33rd round by the Oakland Athletics, while Victor Lara (Miami, FL/Coral Gables) went in the 34th round to the Arizona Diamondbacks. The final Giant selected in the 2010 MLB draft was third baseman Eric Groff (Lebanon, North Lebanon) who joined teammates Arbelo and Lara with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Groff, a Third Team D3baseball All-America Selection, was the 2009 conference Player of the Year and the MVP of 2010 conference tournament.
