BALTIMORE, Md. – The Cabrini women’s soccer team saw its program-best 12-match win streak and 2009 season come to a close Saturday afternoon with a 4-0 loss versus No. 10 Johns Hopkins University at Homewood Field in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Blue Jays led 1-0 at halftime before scoring three goals in the second half to secure the win and advance to the second round. Allie Zazzali sparked the Hopkins’ offense with two goals in the victory.

The Cavaliers’ attack recorded five shots against the JHU defense, posting three in the opening 45 minutes and two in the closing half. Five different members of the Blue & White notched one shot, including senior midfielder Jenna Laufenberg (Allen Branch, N.J./Red Bank Catholic HS).

Laufenberg, senior back Amanda Ribakusky (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury HS), senior forward Heather Thompson (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Boro HS), senior forward Kristin Comly (Rockledge, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) and senior back Jessica Wegelin (Manalapan, N.J./St. John Vianney HS) were part of their final games as Cavaliers Saturday afternoon.

Cabrini played without the services of CSAC Second Team selection and leading scorer Sabina DeGisi (Medford, N.J./Merion Mercy Academy). DeGisi suffered a season-ending knee injury in the conference tournament’s semifinal round against Centenary College November 4.

Junior goalkeeper Gianna Porretta (Hammonton, N.J./Saint Joseph HS) made the start in net for the Cavaliers, totaling seven saves against Hopkins. JHU starting goalkeeper Karen Guszkowski played nearly 77 minutes and tallied three stops in the win.

The Cavaliers returned to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2003 season. Cabrini punched its ticket to the national postseason with a 1-0 overtime victory versus No. 1 seed Marywood University in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) championship match.

The Cavaliers’ season was highlighted by a run of 826 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal, the nation’s second-longest stretch of the season.

Cabrini finishes the 2009 season with a 14-6-1 overall record.
